About Curtis   E.   Doberstein    M.D.

Dr. Curtis Doberstein, interim chair of the Department of Neurosurgery, received his medical degree in 1988 from McGill University in Montreal and completed his residency in neurosurgery and fellowship in cerebral blood flow at the University of California at Los Angeles. Dr. Doberstein is a board-certified neurosurgeon.

In 1995, Dr. Doberstein joined the Neurosurgery Foundation and the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. He directs the Section of Vascular Neurosurgery at Rhode Island Hospital and co-directs the Rhode Island Hospital/Brown University Stroke Program. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at Brown and serves as the Brown Neurosurgery Residency Program Director. As a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, he serves on the Executive Committee of its Section on Cerebrovascular Surgery.

Dr. Doberstein specializes in surgery on the blood vessels of the brain, neck, and spinal column. He sees many patients with circulatory problems such as aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, and carotid artery disease. He also treats people with nervous system tumors, including those of the brain and the skull base. Patients with degenerative spine disorders comprise another large part of his practice.

Other Team Members:

Physician assistant Christopher Fries works with Dr. Doberstein. Mr. Fries graduated from El Camino College in California. After several years as an emergency medical technician, he underwent physician assistant training at D’Youville College in Buffalo. He began work with the Neurosurgery Foundation in 2002. Mr. Fries evaluates new patients, answers patients’ medical questions, and orders prescriptions. For patients who need surgery, he provides care before, during, and after hospitalization.
