Workload and Call Schedule

We adhere to the ACGME’s duty-hours standards. Consistent with the council’s guidelines, residents spend at least one day in seven free of clinical responsibilities.

All residents, except chief residents, are on call in the hospital every fourth day on average. The next morning, they have no clinical responsibilities. Chief residents, in charge of the clinical service, take call daily from home.

Call Facilities

Residents may use a dedicated call room, with sleeping quarters, on the neurosurgical floor. The room contains computers for accessing patient and surgical records as well as for performing word processing and literature searches. The same floor houses a small kitchen.

Rhode Island Hospital’s cafeteria remains open nearly 20 hours a day; an Au Bon Pain bakery-café, adjacent to the hospital, stays open until 11 p.m.
