Overview
What it is
CyberKnife is a type of radiation therapy used for the treatment of a broad range of tumors. The CyberKnife system allows for the delivery of high doses of radiation, with pinpoint accuracy, to the tumor target to destroy it. It is a non-invasive system with many potential benefits to patients including no surgical incision, no pain, no hospital stay and faster recovery time.
Who can benefit
Patients with inoperable or surgically complex tumors, or who may be seeking an alternative to surgery.
How it works
CyberKnife system uses image guided computer software and advanced robotics to continually track the tumor and deliver intense radiation to the exact tumor location, while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue.
Pior to the procedure, CT scans are obtained to determine the size, shape and location of the tumor. Precise treatment is planned accordingly, matching the desired radiation dose to the exact location of the tumor.
During the procedure, the patient is positioned on a cushioned table, and a robotic arm control led by computer software, moves around the table to deliver targeted radiation to the tumor from multiple angles.
Each treatment session can last 30 to 90 minutes, and the treatment may be administered for one to five days, depending on the location and type of tumor being treated.
