Top Doctor Recruited to Offer Advanced Treatments for Glioblastoma
Dr. Eric Wong came to Lifespan from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston where he served as co-director of the Brain Tumor Center and the neuro-oncology unit. He now leads the neuro-oncology program at the Lifespan Cancer Institute and his patients from Boston are following him here.
Sandie Rossini is one of them. Now 43, her story began nine years ago… [she had] an especially deadly brain tumor known as a glioblastoma...
“Nowadays I can say that the surgical treatments have vastly improved, and they are much safer,” said Wong, who has made it his life’s work to treat glioblastomas… “I didn’t want to hear, you know, this disease, you’re only going to have a few years,” said Rossini. But Wong was and continues to offer hope to Rossini, a wife and mother of two. “Sandie now is on a targeted therapy that also helps to contain the tumor,” said Wong. “Sandie is a good example because we have bent the curve to change cancer, including brain cancer, into a chronic disease that we can manage.”
“He saved my life and he continues to do so,” said Rossini who is looking forward to celebrating 10 years post cancer next year. “I always say when I wake up in the morning, I’m grateful.”
