Brown University Health uses advanced laser technologies to fight glioblastoma
WCBV – A public defender’s fight against brain cancer: Michelle Alves’ journey of resilience.
“Glioblastoma is a relentless cancer, known for its poor prognosis and rapid growth rate. Some glioblastomas double in size in just five days. Dr. Clark Chen, a neurosurgeon with Brown University Health’s Norman Prince Neurosciences Institute, emphasizes the need for immediate treatment.
Michelle’s initial surgery removed the center of the tumor, but two nodules remained. Determined to fight, she sought out alternative treatment options to target the remaining cancer.
Chen recommended a minimally invasive procedure that uses heat to target the remaining tumor cells. This technique, done in an MRI suite rather than an operating room, uses a laser to destroy cancer cells with precise heat, minimizing harm to surrounding brain tissue.
“This procedure uses a robotic device to place fibers with millimeter accuracy. With 300 trillion neural connections compressed in the brain, even slight deviations can damage critical pathways,” said Chen.
After carefully inserting the laser fiber into the center of the tumor, Chen’s team successfully destroyed Michelle’s cancerous tissue.”
