Background
After growing up in the United Kingdom, Dr. Sampath received his bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He subsequently received his medical degree from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. Dr. Sampath returned to the Johns Hopkins Hospital and Medical Institutions where he completed a Halsted internship in General Surgery, his residency in neurological surgery under the mentorship of Dr. Donlin Long, as well as fellowship in Neurosurgical Oncology under Dr. Henry Brem.
His practice focuses on of intracranial oncology including primary brain tumors, metastatic brain tumors, pituitary tumors, and skull-based tumors. His practice also incorporates spinal disorders including degenerative spine disease, spinal oncology, and revision spine surgery. He has over 30 years’ experience in a wide variety of neurosurgical procedures and is very active in the teaching of neurosurgery residents and fellows. He is involved in all aspects of robotic surgery at Rhode Island Hospital for both intracranial and spine pathologies.
Dr. Sampath’s research interest involves targeted immunotherapy for brain tumors using Chimeric T cells (CAR-T) and associated strategies. He currently serves as the Director of the Brain Tumor Immunotherapy program, the Director of Robotic Surgery, and the Chief of Neurosurgery at Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence.
